Starting dance brings excitement — and sometimes a few nerves. Here's exactly what to expect when your child walks into their first class at Dance Moves.
Starting dance classes brings excitement along with some nerves — for both children and parents. At Dance Moves of Charleston, we've spent over 20 years helping families navigate the first day, and we've designed our process to make it as smooth as possible.
Before Your First Class
If you plan to use Spot TV to watch your child during class, we recommend setting up your account before the first week. The first few days of class are busy, and our staff is focused on welcoming students and getting classes started — so we may not have time for technical support during that window. Reach out ahead of time and we'll point you in the right direction.
Arriving for Class
When you arrive, an admin team member will greet and check in your child, and a teacher will help them settle into class. A quick, confident goodbye works best for younger dancers — a long farewell can make the separation harder.
Parents wait outside during class. This is partly for space reasons, but also because children focus better when caregivers aren't in the room. You're always welcome at pickup, though, and that's a great time to peek at the space and connect with the instructor.
If your child is nervous about the first day, we recommend scheduling a quick tour ahead of time so the studio feels familiar before class begins.
What Happens During Class
Classes are structured, age-appropriate, and focused on building success. On the first day, students can expect:
- Meeting their instructor and classmates
- Learning classroom expectations and routines
- Simple warm-up activities
- Basic movements and dance terminology
- Age-appropriate technique introduction
- Lots of encouragement and positive feedback
What If My Child Is Shy?
Some children walk right into class. Others need a little extra time to warm up. Both are completely normal, and our teachers are experienced at working with different personalities. We never force participation — we invite it. If a child gets upset, a staff member will support them right away.
Dance Is About More Than Dance
Beyond technique, our classes develop confidence and self-expression, listening skills and focus, discipline and teamwork, friendships and respect, and creativity. These are skills that travel far beyond the studio.
What Should My Child Wear?
Full dress code details are in the For Parents section of our website. We understand that shoes and dancewear sometimes take time to arrive — proper attire should be ready by week two or three. We're happy to schedule fitting appointments outside of class times if you need guidance.
The first dance class is often a bigger adjustment for parents than it is for kids. We're here to help the whole family feel at home.
