Parents are always welcome at Dance Moves — just not inside the classroom during class. Here's the reasoning behind one of our most important policies.
After 22 years of teaching preschool dance, we've learned a lot about what helps young children thrive in a classroom setting. One of the most consistent findings: children learn better when their caregivers aren't in the room.
We want to be clear — parents are always welcome at Dance Moves. You're welcome for tours, drop-off, pickup, and any time you want to speak with a teacher or administrator. This policy is specifically about the classroom during class time.
Creating an Independent Learning Environment
When parents observe class, preschoolers naturally redirect their attention toward their caregivers. They want to perform for you, check in with you, or simply know you're watching. This is completely natural — but it means they're not fully engaged with the instruction.
When children enter the classroom independently, they're free to focus entirely on their teacher and their classmates. That's when real learning happens.
Building Confidence Through Independence
One of the most important things we build in preschool classes is the ability to navigate a structured environment independently. When children experience success in the classroom — following directions, learning a new skill, being part of a group — without a parent there to defer to, they develop genuine confidence in their own abilities.
That confidence carries into school, friendships, and every new experience they encounter.
Ensuring Fairness for All Students
On any given day, some parents can stay and some can't. When parent presence is inconsistent, some children feel their classmates have something they don't. Maintaining a consistent policy ensures every dancer feels equally included and equally valued.
You Can Still Watch Every Class
Through the Spot TV app, you can watch your child's class in real time from your phone, without creating distractions in the classroom. It's the best of both worlds — you get to see everything, and your child gets to be fully present.
The Exception: Parent & Me Classes
For children walking through age 2.5, we offer Parent & Me classes that are specifically designed for caregiver-child participation. These classes are built around that bond. In our leveled classes, independence is part of the curriculum.
